Liz Clayton’s White Boats works gel so well together because of their use of negative space. The boats themselves – and there are plenty – aren’t actually white, rather the greys the artist has used bring out the shade of a sunny day at the lake or at sea. What’s left behind is the merest ripple of a sail, or one on the water, or a shadow down one side of a boat. The sheer number of boats also adds to the mood, conjuring up shifts in perspective only time spent by the water’s edge can teach.
